Broccoli Raba, or Rapini

A bit like a leafy broccoli, this relative does best in cooler weather. It tastes rather different, offering a bit more 'tang' than it's blander relative, and is a close, more cultured relative of the plants used to produce canola seed for our birds to eat.

Rapini is easy to grow, if you can find the seed! Unfortunately, this plant is not always easy to find seed for. But don't worry, if you can't find rapini seed, just plant some canola instead; simply pick some of the round black or brownish canola seeds out of your canary's seed mix, and plant those! They will produce a taller plant with larger leaves and more stem, but the canaries will love this close relative of rapini every bit as much as they enjoy the real thing.

Both canola and rapini prefer cool weather, and are resistant to most cole-crop pests and diseases. They will do quite well even in poor soil, and are frost-resistent, overwintering easily in many areas of the country with a little protection. The spring shoots are tasty, and dense with nutrients.

This site is dedicated to all of those who try to help others on our journey to a better
tomorrow, and especially to Jack Merkens, whose last words to me were "Promise
me you'll keep writing about those canaries! Never stop, ok? Promise!"
Okay, Jack. I promise.
