A Garden Full of Food!

This is a shot of part of Robirda's small plot in one of Kelowna's Community Gardens. Sponsored by the city, this program allows urban residents who would otherwise have nowhere to garden, the chance to grow some of their own foods, as well as enjoy the pleasures and health benefits of gardening.

Vacant lots that would otherwise stand fallow are divided into small plots, and each is assigned to a would-be gardener, who, for a small annual fee, becomes responsible for farming that plot organically, without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers, as well as keeping invasive weeds under control.

Robirda has opted for an intensive interplanted collection vegetables and flowers, most of which are useful for both birds and humans, a few medicinally, others as herbal supplements or potions, and of course, plenty of food plants! In the bed closest to the camera you can easily see calendula plants with carrots and herbs, while further back the peacock kale stands out amonst the surrounding nasturtiums, that are hiding the cucumber, onions, and pumpkin plants behind them. Still further back, among others, are roses, garlic, tomatoes, and curly kale.

This site is dedicated to all of those who try to help others on our journey to a better
tomorrow, and especially to Jack Merkens, whose last words to me were "Promise
me you'll keep writing about those canaries! Never stop, ok? Promise!"
Okay, Jack. I promise.
