Bottomless Pits

This is a good shot of the 'bottomless pits' which greet Dan and Dolly every time they come near the nest.

See those little spots at the top and bottom of the beak?   (actually, the bottom one is the tongue)   These spots being so easy to see helps the parent by making it very clear just where the food has to be placed to make its way safely down the baby's throat.

It must seem like they have been feeding these babies forever, sometimes!!

This site is dedicated to all of those who try to help others on our journey to a better
tomorrow, and especially to Jack Merkens, whose last words to me were "Promise
me you'll keep writing about those canaries! Never stop, ok? Promise!"
Okay, Jack. I promise.
