Cleaning The Nest

After the each chick has gotten its fair share, Dolly begins to clean the nest, ignoring the two chicks who are still gaping.   Everybody received the same few bites each - still hungry or not, her chicks will just have to wait til she has finished her chores.

The chicks' droppings are enclosed in a membrane, which makes it easy for her to pick them up.   She will carry them in her crop to an spot outside the nest, where she will leave them.

This chore accomplished, she will then begin all over again, eating food to carry, partially digested in her crop, to feed to her chicks.

This site is dedicated to all of those who try to help others on our journey to a better
tomorrow, and especially to Jack Merkens, whose last words to me were "Promise
me you'll keep writing about those canaries! Never stop, ok? Promise!"
Okay, Jack. I promise.
