Eating Vertically

This may look like an unusual position for an eating bird to adopt, but actually it's not - canaries and other finches evolved to eat mostly grass-seeds and insects are highly adapted to clinging vertically to their food while eating.

Having the chance to practice such natural moves in the aviary helps add interest to their meals, and liveliness to their life. The acrobat in this picture is Tiny, 5 years old and one of my best singers./p>

A normal way to eat - for a canary!

This site is dedicated to all of those who try to help others on our journey to a better
tomorrow, and especially to Jack Merkens, whose last words to me were "Promise
me you'll keep writing about those canaries! Never stop, ok? Promise!"
Okay, Jack. I promise.
